Trevethan Cornish craft gin Wins gold!
Trevethan Cornish Craft Gin has been awarded a Gold Medal by the worlds leading spirit judging panel – International Wine and Spirit Competition.
The IWSC has been tasting and reviewing the world’s finest wine and spirits for over 50 years. In that time, it has earned a reputation for innovation and engagement, as well as unbiased, meticulous and authoritative judging.
This year it is has awarded Trevethan Cornish Craft Gin a Gold Medal in its London Dry Gin category, one of the toughest and exclusive gin production categories in the world.
Trevethan Distillery open its doors in 2015 when Master Distiller – John Hall and Food Engineer Rob Cuffe, decided to resurrect Rob’s grandfathers family gin recipe that dated back to 1929. Since its inception John has been perfecting their take on the London Dry method of gin distillation using both exotic and handpicked Cornish botanicals. London Dry is a method of production that is widely coined but seldom accurately understood. Also known as the “one shot” method, it requires a meticulous understanding of both distillation and flavor extraction. Flavour infusion from an array of botanicals is achieved in one finely balanced distillation. The distillate must achieve certain quality standards including an average abv of 70% prior to dilution and no additional flavours or distillates can be added to final distillate other than water to dilute it to bottling strength.
Most modern “craft” distilleries use the Contemporary Distilled methodology which involves blending individual or bulk botanical distillates into a neutral spirit. This method is quicker and requires less recipe and process development prior to commercial release.
This is why London Dry Gin is seen as the pinnacle of Gin production, as it takes time to perfect a balanced and smooth flavour profile, as well as achieve consistent product quality.
Trevethan has been entering the IWSC since its inception and has never received less than a silver medal, each year improving on their score, reading and learning from the judges notes and perfecting their world class distillation methods. This year they achieved their ambition of a gold medal achieving 95 points out of 100. Only 11 gold medals were awarded in the London Dry category in this year’s competition, despite there being thousands of entrants from all over the world.
Now, Trevethan can proudly proclaim its status as one of the best craft distilleries in the World and the team are looking forward to flying the flag of Cornwall at the same time.
